El Proyecto del Barrio has provided a wide array of health and medical, employment and training, substance abuse and mental health and at-risk youth programs to the community for 35 years. Founded in 1971 to provide services to the northeast San Fernando Valley, El Proyecto has expended its services to the entire San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley and East Los Angeles, covering 400 square miles.
The organization's more than three decades of success flow from its strategy linking El Proyecto to the communities it serves, enhancing its ability to identify and help many individuals and families that have not been reached by previous outreach efforts. The organization infuses culturally appropriate strategies with an affirmation of family values and traditions. This approach has established El Proyecto as a trusted service provider that provides a safe and respectful environment for its clients.
El Proyecto has built a legacy of success by working with community organizations, cities, Los Angeles County, the state and federal government, small companies and major corporations to provide the resources to provide bilingual/bicultural (English/Spanish) comprehensive community services and advocacy to Latinos and other economically disadvantaged youth and adults.
The organization's volunteer Board of Directors, which develops El Proyecto del Barrio's policies, has social and economic roots in the areas we serve. Services are implemented by professional staff members with skills ranging from planning and management to technical expertise. El Proyecto del Barrio has built a cherished pride in excellence in its "whole person" approach, which has been honored both regionally and nationally.
El Proyecto del Barrio provides five major categories of services to the community, including:
Health and Medical Services:
Our Family Health Care Clinics total more than 100,000 annual patient contacts. The clinics are operated in Arleta and Winnetka in the San Fernando Valley, Azusa in the San Gabriel Valley, and East Los Angeles. Additional services are provided at three school-based clinics in partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District. El Proyecto also has an extensive HIV Services & Treatment program that offers a wide variety of outpatient medical services and education and outreach services. In keeping with our mission, all medical treatment is provided to whomever is in need regardless of their ability to pay for services rendered. El Proyecto also has a mobile health services van that provides services throughout our service area.
Youth Opportunities:
The Youth Opportunities Program provides services at El Proyecto's Sun Valley and Winnetka facilities in the San Fernando Valley. The program offers youth ages 14 to 21 a single point of contact for accessing age-specific and developmental services that provide educational, occupational and life skills attainment. The program provides classroom-based learning, tutoring and study skills instruction as well as employment attainment services-all of which prepare troubled youth with the skills they need to be successful in the workforce. Partners participating in this program include Sun Valley WorkSource Center, Los Angeles Unified School District, Los Angeles Valley College, Pierce College, California Employment Development Department and Pacoima Skill Center.
Employment Services:
El Proyecto's Sun Valley WorkSource Center and Career Center provides the career seeker with a variety of services necessary to complete a successful job search. The Center is Continuous Quality Improvement-certified. Training and educational, career counseling, placement and retention and assessment services are provided, as well as the use of computers with internet access and all other key resources needed to secure a new position. The Center also offers specialized services to disabled workers, dislocated workers, older workers and veterans. Partners include The American Indian Counseling Center, Department of Aging, Los Angeles Unified School District, Los Angeles Valley College, California Department of Rehabilitation, California Employment Development Department, Welfare to Work and the Youth Opportunities Program.
Substance Abuse Services/Mental Health:
The outpatient program provides counseling and referrals to clients with drug and mental health problems. El Proyecto's Substance Abuse Program also provides services for women who are pregnant, postpartum or parenting. The program is staffed by bilingual, drug-certified counselors who assist clients in areas including domestic violence/sexual abuse, self-esteem, peer support, life skills, health education, drug education, and parenting. The program also provides services funded under Proposition 36. These services are for first or second time non-violent drug offenders, who receive treatment rather than incarceration. General Relief recipients with substance abuse issues are also treated in the program.
Child Care Services:
El Proyecto del Barrio will begin offering Child Care Services in 2007 in its new Child Care Center in Panorama City. Watch for more information soon!
