El Proyecto del Barrio's Family Health Center-San Gabriel Valley has been a fixture in the community since 1918. The health center, located in Azusa, was founded by community leader and philanthropist Kate Slauson Vosburg in 1918. It was operated by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services from 1931 through October 2002, when it was one of 11 county health clinics that were closed because of the County's fiscal crisis. It was reopened by the City of Azusa in collaboration with El Proyecto del Barrio in March 2004.
The reopening of the clinic, which was formally celebrated May 26, 2004, was made possible by extraordinary teamwork between Congresswoman Hilda Solis, Supervisor Gloria Molina, The California Endowment, the City of Azusa and El Proyecto del Barrio. In January 2005 Congresswoman Solis presented El Proyecto with two federal grants totaling $417,000 for expansion of services at the health center. Today, El Proyecto del Barrio is operating the Azusa Health Center 20 hours per week and treating more than 250 patients per month. The Health Center completed more than 3,000 patient encounters in 2004. The vast majority of these patients had no other health care options in the local community.
"The reopening of this clinic has been an opportunity for people who have lost their health services to once again feel that there is a place to go that is affordable, accessible and in their own community," said Azusa Mayor Cristina Cruz-Madrid.
El Proyecto del Barrio, a non-profit comprehensive human service corporation, was founded in 1971 to provide health and human services to the San Fernando Valley community. Over the last three decades, El Proyecto del Barrio has earned a reputation for excellence and expanded its services to East Los Angeles and Azusa. Comprehensive community services are provided to a primary target population of economically disadvantaged families and individuals. "We are enjoying the opportunity to serve the Azusa community," said El Proyecto del Barrio President and CEO Corinne Sanchez. "We look forward to securing additional funding to provide access to services for even more members of the community."
The Azusa Health Center provides a number of accessible and affordable health care services for the community, including Adult Medicine, Pediatric Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Immunization, Family Planning, Health Education, Laboratory and HIV Testing. The clinic, which is located at 150 North Azusa Avenue, is currently open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, 8 a.m. to noon Thursday and 8 a.m. to noon Friday.
