The Family Development Network (FDN) collaborative created an inter-agency referral system to ensure that families receive services within the organization and are given priority to other services offered through agencies of the collaborative. A primary component of the City's Human Services Delivery System, FDN employs long-term case management services to assist families in overcoming obstacles to a self-sufficient lifestyle. A services advocate, on behalf of youth, monitor client progress and frequently reassess family needs. El Proyecto del Barrio provides services as a member of the North and South San Fernando Valley partnerships of community-based organizations that implement a comprehensive array of services.
El Proyecto del Barrio directly provides youth tutoring, parenting classes, job placement services for youth and adults through El Proyecto del Barrio's City funded WorkSource and Youth Opportunities Program Centers, and information and referral, including legal services, health care, transportation assistance, literacy education and counseling. Families are also invited to participate in enrichment activities such as group events, workshops, and recreational and educational activities for participants who meet and exceed their goals during their participation in the FDN program. Case management includes the provision of Youth Advocacy Program (YAP) services to the City's at-risk youth and their families referred by the Los Angeles Police Department, the City Attorney's Parenting Program, the Los Angeles County Probation Department, the Los Angeles Unified School District Police. Proof of income (or self-certified affidavit) and proof of address are required at the time of program assessment.
Youth Tutoring
Tutoring is offered at El Proyecto del Barrio's Family Development Network main tutoring groups are also facilitated at area schools and community locations upon request. Students attend tutoring for a set time period based on an academic need. Their grades are monitored throughout their participation in the tutoring program and consistent attendance is mandatory. Ages of participants range from third grade through high school. Please contact our offices for participation information.
Parenting Classes
Certified Parenting Class Instructors facilitate classes in English and Spanish throughout the year at locations throughout the San Fernando Valley, including LAUSD elementary, middle and high schools, community agencies, and El Proyecto del Barrio sites. Classes run weekly for eight sessions, followed by a graduation ceremony and certificate presentation. Instructors are trained through the Los Niňos Bien Educados, an approved curriculum for court ordered participants. Curriculum topics include: what it means to be a parent, self esteem and praise, discipline and guidance, stress, communication, child/adolescent development, social risks/drugs and alcohol, domestic abuse, consequences, and individual client assessment and referral. Youth Advocacy Program
The Youth Advocacy Program (YAP) is a 15 week group counseling class that is provided to at-risk and/or first-time offending juveniles. Clients may be self-referred or referred through the LAPD following an arrest. This may fulfill aspects of the probation requirements set forth. Participants must be between the ages of 10 and 17. Counseling curriculum includes such topics as anger management, alcohol and drug abuse, health education, family systems, personal reflection and emotional expression, decisions, goal and consequences, guest speakers, and individual assessment and referral to the City's Youth Opportunities Program for employment opportunities.
Enrichment opportunities, such as group events, workshops, and recreational activities, are also available for participants who meet and exceed their goals. Parents of participating youth are also encouraged to attend Parenting Classes simultaneously. Case Managers are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Van Nuys Police Station, 6240 Sylmar Avenue in Van Nuys, from 8:00 a.m. to 12 p.m. and at the West Valley Police Station, 19020 Vanowen Street in Reseda, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to provide the following services: YAP intakes, case management, and client eligibility determination. NYPUM
The National Youth Program Using Minibikes (NYPUM) is a Honda sponsored program that uses minibike training and riding as a motivational tool to offer youth an opportunity to develop self-esteem, values for daily living, and a sense of belonging. Participants begin by undergoing a set number of classroom training sessions where they learn riding skills and motorcycle maintenance. Upon completion, bi-monthly riding trips are scheduled for youth who continue to meet their weekly goals. Participants attend weekly mentoring sessions to help monitor the youth's progress at home and at school and check in with their youth counselor with any problems or questions.
